Vanir — Wyrd

Genre: Melodic Death Metal

About: Formed in 2010, Denmark's Vanir have spent over a decade crafting history-driven melodic death metal, and Wyrd marks their eighth full-length album. Released via Mighty Music, the record revolves around the theme of fate — drawn from war, human choices, and their consequences — spanning historical subjects from Viking-era battles to the 1683 siege of Vienna. Mixed and mastered at Demigod Recordings (Gaerea, Okkultist), Wyrd is recommended for fans of Amon Amarth, Wolfheart, and Insomnium. Listen on Spotify.

Nervosa — Slave Machine

Genre: Thrash/Death Metal

About: São Paulo-born thrash institution Nervosa return with their sixth studio album via Napalm Records, produced once again by Martin Furia of German thrash legends Destruction. Founding guitarist and vocalist Prika Amaral — the only constant member across the band's entire history — leads the charge on what the band describe as their most brutal and melodic record to date, doubling down on the aggressive, socially conscious thrash direction solidified on 2023's Jailbreak. The 12-track album tackles themes of control, power, and systemic oppression, and was recorded at Persephonic Studio and mixed and mastered at Jurassic Recordings. Listen on Spotify.

Anasarca — Achlys

Genre: Melodic/Brutal Death Metal

About: German death metal veterans Anasarca — founded in 1995 — return with their fifth full-length album via Selfmadegod Records, their most emotionally intense record to date. Continuing their tradition of concept-driven releases (previous albums featured lyrics written by death-row inmates and terminally ill people), Achlys takes on the theme of grief, with lyrics contributed by people who have lost loved ones. Recorded at Wretched Noise Studio in Oldenburg and mastered by Dennis Israel (Amon Amarth, Primordial, Asphyx), the album represents Anasarca's heaviest and most personal work in their three-decade career. Listen on Spotify.

Stone the Oracle — Caustic Maxims

Genre: Death Metal / Technical Death Metal

About: Boston, Massachusetts duo Stone the Oracle describe their sound as "heathen death metal," and Caustic Maxims is their fourth release following 2024's Savage Weapons. The five-track EP was recorded and mixed by the band themselves and mastered by Colin Davis at Imperial Mastering, and includes a cover of Bolt Thrower's "No Guts, No Glory." A lean, self-produced underground offering, the EP is available as a name-your-price download on Bandcamp. Listen on Spotify.

Relic — Crown of Flies

Genre: Blackened Death Metal

About: A freshly formed outfit from Milwaukee, Wisconsin, Relic is a supergroup of sorts built from veterans of the local underground — members have previously played in Jungle Rot, Micawber, Emblazoned, Decrescent, and Slam Pig. Their debut EP Crown of Flies is a four-song, sub-10-minute slab of 90s-worshipping blackened death metal, recorded at Belle City Sound in Racine, Wisconsin, and produced by Chris Wisco (Novembers Doom, Morbid Saint). Mixed and mastered by Billy Diamond, the self-released EP is a no-frills statement of underground brutality. Listen on Spotify.

Ailurophobia — Contemplation of a Declining World

Genre: Death Metal / Brutal Death Metal

About: Geneva, Switzerland-based death metal quintet Ailurophobia formed in 2021, and Contemplation of a Declining World is their debut full-length, following their 2024 demo EP Die Humans, Die! The 10-track album was recorded, mixed, and mastered by Vladimir Cochet at Conatus Studios in Switzerland, with music composed by guitarist Laure. Lyrically, the album is a sardonic, unflinching critique of modern society — touching on social media addiction, performative activism, wealth inequality, and the erosion of collective reason — delivered through visceral, rhythmically driven modern death metal. Listen on Spotify.

And the unearthed and on rotation underground bands this week include: Intoxicated, Malefic, and Epigram.
