Here is the Cutting Edge Metal team’s roundup of this week’s essential new metal releases…
Cogadh — Kingmaker
Genre: Black Metal
About: Cogadh is a two-piece black metal duo formed in 2021 between Ontario and Quebec, Canada, who quickly followed their formation with the debut EP Runetongue in 2022. Kingmaker is their debut full-length, released independently, and pushes the band's melodic black metal foundation into new territory by incorporating Irish whistles, accordion, varied vocal styles, and atmospheric sounds recorded in the woods of Quebec. The album walks a distinct path within the genre, blending traditional black metal aggression with earthy, folk-tinged instrumentation that feels rooted in the natural landscape around them.
Acranius — Whiteout
Genre: Brutal Death Metal / Deathcore
About: Acranius is a slamming death metal band from Rostock, Germany, founded in 2009 and signed to Rising Nemesis Records. Whiteout is their fifth full-length album and the follow-up to 2021's Mercy Denied, written, recorded, and produced by guitarist and co-founder Björn Frommberger. The album is described as a return to the band's roots, fusing their signature slam-death influence with modern deathcore, and features nine tracks that continue the brutal, groove-driven sound that's earned them festival appearances at Wacken Open Air and Summer Breeze.
Epigram — Obsolescent
Genre: Blackened Symphonic Death Metal
About: Epigram is the solo project of Los Angeles-based composer Luis Echevarria, formed in 2015, who released his debut EP Shadows in 2017 to favorable reviews in the underground metal press. Obsolescent is the project's debut full-length — a 28-minute concept album that continues the dystopian narrative begun on Shadows, this time following the lower classes as they rise against their ruling elite oppressors in a post-plague world. The album features guest guitar solos by Sanjay Kumar of Inferi and Wormhole, and cover artwork by the prolific Pär Olofsson, released independently.
Putrisect — Putrisect
Genre: Old School Death Metal
About: Putrisect is a death metal band from Baltimore, Maryland, formed in the summer of 2013 by members of Marrow, Plaguewielder, and Burning Axe. Their self-titled EP is their third release overall and their first new material since 2018's Cascading Inferno, released via underground label Rotted Life. Drawing on an early '90s template influenced by the likes of Bolt Thrower and Incantation, the six-track EP delivers a groove-heavy, cavernous take on pure death metal and includes a cover of "Espectro" by Spanish death metal act Machetazo.
From Ashes Reborn — Chasing Utopia
Genre: Melodic Death Metal
About: From Ashes Reborn is a melodic death metal band from Wittlich, Germany, formed in 2017, whose 2018 debut Existence Exiled — produced by Markus Stock — established them as a promising force in the European melodic death metal scene. Chasing Utopia is their long-awaited sophomore full-length, released independently in a limited digipak edition, and finds the band delivering a heavier, more direct sound while retaining the sweeping melodic atmosphere and Scandinavian-influenced riffwork that defined their debut. Lyrically, the album explores themes of decay, deception, and resistance in a world that has lost itself.
Blackbraid — Nocturnal Womb
Genre: Black Metal
About: Blackbraid is the solo indigenous black metal project of Sgah'gahsowáh, based in the Adirondack wilderness of New York, whose rapid rise through three acclaimed full-length albums has made him one of the most talked-about figures in contemporary black metal. Nocturnal Womb is a standalone three-track EP, releasing two tracks — "Nocturnal Womb" and "Celestial Bloodlust" — that were deemed too dark and visceral to fit within the narrative arc of the Blackbraid album trilogy, alongside an acoustic instrumental rendition of "Barefoot Ghost Dance on Blood Soaked Soil" from Blackbraid I. The EP arrives as the project gears up for a UK and Ireland headline tour alongside Winterfylleth and Noctem.
And the unearthed and on rotation underground bands this week include: The Primer, Ossomancer
