Here is the Cutting Edge Metal team’s roundup of this week’s essential new metal releases…

Harrowed — The Eternal Hunger

Genre: Death Metal

Rising from the ashes of Swedish death metal outliers Morbus Chron, Stockholm's Harrowed was born from the creative vision of vocalist/drummer Adam Lindmark, who teamed up with guitarist Tobias Alpadie (VAK, Tribulation). The duo released a demo and a split in 2021 and 2022, respectively, before arriving at their long-awaited debut full-length. The Eternal Hunger channels classic Autopsy, Entombed, Obituary, and Death Strike through a distinctly rotten lens, blending old-school American and Scandinavian death metal with punk riffage and a raw vintage edge. The album features guest appearances from Nicke Andersson (Entombed, Death Breath) and Scott Carlson (Repulsion, Death Breath), and is released via the German underground institution Dying Victims Productions. Announce the Apocalypse — VOID

Genre: Thrash/Progressive Metal

Formed in 2016 in metropolitan Detroit by guitarist/vocalist Dominic Ryan Gabriel, Announce the Apocalypse relocated to Tampa, Florida, where the city's extreme metal legacy has visibly left its mark on their sound. The band broke through with their 2021 sophomore album Nefarious Means — recorded at the legendary Morrisound Studios with At the Gates drummer Adrian Erlandsson on session duties — before signing to Sliptrick Records for their 2024 concept album Experience Machine. VOID is their fourth release and continues the narrative of its predecessor, drawing comparisons to Death, Nevermore, and Coroner with proggy, fretless-bass-driven thrash. Listen on Spotify.

Blackwater Drowning — Obscure Sorrows

Genre: Melodic Death Metal/Metalcore

North Carolina's Blackwater Drowning, formed around the pairing of vocalist Morgan Riley and guitarist Jeremy Bennett, have built a reputation supporting the likes of Soulfly, Jinjer, and Crypta since their early days. Obscure Sorrows is the band's sophomore full-length following their debut Sonder//Satori, and was mixed and mastered by Cryptopsy guitarist Christian Donaldson (Shadow of Intent, Suffocation). The album features guest solos from Greg Burgess of Allegaeon and Japanese guitar virtuoso Yo Onityan, along with artwork by Giannis Nakos (Emperor, The Agonist, Aborted), and is released via Bleeding Art Collective and Blood Blast Distribution. Listen on Spotify.

Mývalyĭr — The Past Tales

Genre: Melodic Death Metal

Formed in 2023 from isolated pandemic-era musical exchanges between UK-based musicians, Mývalyĭr set themselves apart within melodic death metal by weaving folk instruments — violin, cello, and nyckelharpa — into a heavy, cinematic framework. The Past Tales is the band's debut full-length, a concept album exploring conflict in its many forms: historical, cultural, and personal. The album features artwork by Felipe Machado Franco (Blind Guardian, Iced Earth, Rhapsody of Fire) and mixing/mastering by Janne Lunnas (Boreal Grave, Shade of Sorrow), and arrives independently. Listen on Spotify.

Divine Threat — Pillar of Agony

Genre: Groove Metal

Originally formed in 2019, Divine Threat spent years honing their sound through a string of singles before arriving at Pillar of Agony, their debut full-length album. The eleven-track record draws from the blunt-force tradition of groove metal — anchored by heavy, crushing riffs, dynamic songwriting, and gritty, aggressive vocals — while incorporating moments of clean melody and ambitious structural shifts. Released independently, the album showcases a band fully realizing the sound they've been building toward since their formation. Listen on Spotify.

Unburier — As Time Awaits

Genre: Technical Death/Thrash Metal

Hailing from Somerset, England, Unburier was founded in 2019 and relaunched in 2022 with their debut EP Twisted Existence, followed by 2024's Nebulous — both demonstrating the band's sharp technical approach rooted in the lineage of Death, Necrophagist, and Revocation. As Time Awaits is their third EP, a three-track, sub-fifteen-minute assault blending technical death metal with thrash aggression and Lovecraftian lyrical themes. Having appeared at Bloodstock Open Air and Incineration Festival, and shared stages with Sanguisugabogg and Crypta, the band self-release the EP independently. Listen on Spotify.

Hamarr — Necrotic Rituals

Genre: Death Metal

Indianapolis death metal duo Hamarr unleash their debut full-length Necrotic Rituals via Iron Fortress Records, following a self-titled EP and several prior single releases. Channeling HM-2-driven Swedish chainsaw worship in the vein of Entombed and Dismember while drawing on the blunt savagery of Black Breath, the ten-track album was recorded, mixed, and mastered by Caleb Lewis at Champion O.I. in Fort Wayne, Indiana. The record features guest contributions from Alex Cloutier of Primal Horde and Kurtis Hall of 1 Body 6 Graves, with artwork provided by Moribund Art. Listen on Spotify.

Decreation — Psychotic Re-Invention of God

Genre: Death Metal

Formed in 2022 in Tampere, Finland, Decreation is a death metal force built from experienced musicians, including members with ties to Pyre of Hypocrisy, Clamosum, and Erase This Earth. Their debut full-length Psychotic Re-Invention of God tears into the rotted value systems of religion and explores the darkest corners of the human mind, paying homage to the pioneers of the genre while stamping it with their own identity. The album is released via French label Khaoszophy Records. Listen on Spotify.

And the unearthed and on rotation underground bands this week include: Magnacult, Buried Shallow, In Malice’s Wake, and Endless Curse
