Here is the Cutting Edge Metal team’s roundup of this week’s essential new metal releases…

Atavistia – Old Gods Awaken

Genre: Folk/Symphonic Melodic Death Metal

About: Formed in 2017 in Vancouver, British Columbia, Atavistia have carved out a niche bringing Scandinavian-flavored melodic death metal to North America, drawing frequent comparisons to Wintersun and Ensiferum. Old Gods Awaken is the band's fourth full-length, released via Blood Blast Distribution, and marks a significant stylistic shift — leaning harder into folk metal elements than any of their previous records, including 2022's Cosmic Warfare. Themes of nature, mythology, and cosmic cleansing run throughout, culminating in an 11-minute title track that serves as the album's epic centerpiece. Listen on Spotify.

Arroganz – Death Doom Punks

Genre: Death Metal / Hardcore Punk

About: Hailing from Germany and active since 2008, Arroganz are a trio who made their full-length debut with Dark and Deathless in 2011 and have steadily built their underground reputation across six subsequent albums, most recently Quintessenz in 2024. Death Doom Punks, their seventh full-length, is out via Testimony Records and does exactly what the title promises — fusing old-school death metal brutality with the raw, unpolished energy of punk and hardcore. Lyrically the album takes aim at personal, philosophical, and social targets, and the band describes the record not just as an album but as a manifesto for an uncompromising, DIY creative mindset. Crown the Beast – Judgement

Genre: Groove/Death Metal

About: Crown the Beast are a death metal band from Odense, Denmark, formed in 2016, who released their debut album Spawn of Tomorrow in 2020 before signing to Emanzipation Productions. Judgement is a three-track EP that doubles down on the band's groove-heavy, modern death metal approach, with apocalyptic lyrical themes centered on mankind's reckoning and the end of the world. The EP was self-recorded by the band and produced by Horde Echo Sound Production — a collaboration that grew out of touring Ukraine — and includes a cover of Six Feet Under's "Human Target." Listen on Spotify.

Jungle Rot – Cruel Face of War

Genre: Death Metal

About: Wisconsin death metal stalwarts Jungle Rot have been grinding since 1992 and released their debut album Skin the Living in 1996. Cruel Face of War is their twelfth studio album, out via Unique Leader Records, and was produced by Chris Djuricic at Bell City Sound Company. True to the band's reputation, the record is a no-frills slab of pit-ready, groove-driven old-school death metal, and features a guest appearance from Dave Ingram of Benediction on the track "Horrors Vile." The band is supporting the album with an extensive European tour through the summer. Listen on Spotify.

Krushya – DooMinion

Genre: Death/Thrash/Grindcore

About: Krushya are a Greek extreme metal trio from Patras, active since 2000, with a discography stretching from their debut album Ashta (2005) through .Dogma. (2021). DooMinion is a concept album described as a sequel to .Dogma., exploring themes of dystopian control, societal manipulation, and the mechanisms of domination — the band describe it as portraying "a new doctrine established in a new dystopian society." The album was recorded and produced at Flowers in Concrete Studio in Patras. Listen on Spotify.

Verba Serpentis – Torchbearers

Genre: Melodic Black Metal

About: Formed in 2024 in Klagenfurt (Carinthia), Austria, Verba Serpentis are a young but focused black metal outfit who released their debut EP Ophidic Gnosis in October 2024 via Kvlt und Kaos Productions, drawing comparisons to the likes of Dissection, Mgla, and Tsjuder. Torchbearers is their self-released sophomore EP, mixed and mastered at Soundtempel Studio in Germany, and pushes their melodic, ritualistic sound further into occult and esoteric territory. Rooted in themes of spiritual transcendence, serpentine symbolism, and satanic darkness, the band describes their music as a "unified, ritualistic expression" rather than mere genre exercise. Listen on Spotify.

And the unearthed and on rotation underground bands this week include: NHLFAN90, and Heathen Peace
