In Malice's Wake — The Profound Darkness

Genre: Death/Blackened Thrash Metal

About: Melbourne, Australia's In Malice's Wake have been one of the country's premier thrash and death metal forces since forming around 2001–2002, and The Profound Darkness is their fifth studio album. Where previous records channeled fury at organized religion, this nine-track effort turns its gaze toward death itself — exploring the uncertainty and darkness that lies beyond the grave, drawing on the ferocity of Slayer, Sepultura, and Deicide. Self-released and mixed by Chris Themelco at Monolith Studio in Melbourne, the album is tighter and more focused than 2020's The Blindness of Faith, leaning into blackened tremolo leads and lightning-fast chromatic riffing without sacrificing memorable songwriting. Cognizance — In Light, No Shape

Genre: Progressive/Technical Death Metal

About: Based between Leeds, UK and Graz, Austria, Cognizance have been a rising force in progressive and technical death metal since their formation in 2012. In Light, No Shape is their fourth full-length on Willowtip Records, and marks the first lineup change in a decade — founding guitarist Alex Baillie steps into the vocal role following the 2023 departure of original singer Henry Pryce. The album was mixed and mastered by Ronnie Björnström (Aeon, Blood Red Throne) and channels influences from mid-90s Death, Extol, and Meshuggah through a more organic, visceral production approach than their previous releases, including 2024's Phantazein. Cover art was handled by Jef Whitehead, known for his work with Nails and Leviathan. Listen on Spotify.

Infected Dead — Invicta

Genre: Technical Death Metal

About: Hailing from Kent, England, Infected Dead are a five-piece technical death metal band who regrouped with a new lineup in 2024 following a lengthy hiatus after their 2017 EP Archaic Malevolence. Invicta is a four-track EP drawing on Lovecraftian horror and themes of eldritch abominations and anticosmicism, blending American and European death metal influences into technically demanding but emotionally varied material. Production was handled by V. Santura of Triptykon and Dark Fortress fame at Woodshed Studios, with cover art by Artem Grigoryev, whose work has appeared on Profound Lore releases. The EP is a self-released effort and represents what the band is calling the beginning of their "second era." Listen on Spotify.

Necropia — Our Kingdom Befouled

Genre: Technical Deathcore

About: Long Island, New York's Necropia have been a staple of the NYC underground metal circuit since their formation, dropping their debut EP in 2012 before releasing their highly regarded first full-length, Desecration Complex, in 2018. Our Kingdom Befouled is the long-awaited follow-up — eight years between albums — and finds the band blending technical deathcore precision with progressive and melodic death metal elements across twelve tracks. The self-released record leans heavier into jagged tech-death riffing and tremolo walls of sound than its predecessor while retaining the syncopated grooves and melodic shred the band built their reputation on. Necropia describe their name as meaning "The Deadland," and the band rehearses in a studio situated between two cemeteries on Long Island — fitting for music this steeped in dread and atmosphere. Listen on Spotify.

Immortal Form — Exterminatus Extremis

Genre: Death Metal

About: Northern Virginia's Immortal Form describe their sound as "Terminator Riffs // Death Metal," and Exterminatus Extremis delivers exactly that — five tracks of traditional death metal with a modern edge released on cassette via Heavy and Fast Records & Distro. The EP features a new vocalist and was recorded and mixed by Kevin Bernsten at Developing Nations and mastered by Brad Boatright at Audiosiege, two producers well known for their work in underground extreme metal. Their previous release, Ashes of a Fallen World, appeared in late 2024, making this a rapid follow-up that pushes further into mechanized, brutal territory with thematic content rooted in holy war and human extermination. Listen on Spotify.

Display of Decay — Desolate Dawn, Pt. 1

Genre: Death Metal

About: Formed in Edmonton, Alberta in 2007, Display of Decay have built a reputation for old-school death metal laced with thrash and doom influences, and Desolate Dawn, Pt. 1 marks their seventh release overall. Drawing on the foundational brutality of Cannibal Corpse, Malevolent Creation, and Cryptopsy, the band has sharpened the "death groove" sound they developed on 2023's Vitriol into something tighter and more commanding. Over the course of their career they have shared the stage with Kataklysm, Cattle Decapitation, The Faceless, Origin, and Beyond Creation, cementing their standing in the North American death metal underground. The "Pt. 1" designation signals more material to come. Listen on Spotify.

And the unearthed and on rotation underground bands this week include: Ashen Horde, Nights Of Malice, My Own Will, Intracranial Purulency, and Sad Whisperings
